CHAPTER 8
DIY Contributions
In keeping with the budget angle, this chapter shows you how to stage various do-it-yourself plans, together with crafty volunteers, to add more meaning to elements of your day. You dream it, you do it . and it’s yours. Everything from the cake to the centerpieces, your bouquets, and the theme items you’ll need are yours to design, craft, and present. Guests will be amazed at the professional-looking results, and don’t be surprised if they ask you to create similar pieces for their own family weddings. More than a few brides have turned their own wedding DIY skills into a business, preferring the hands-on, creative lifestyle to desk-sitting, spreadsheets, and performance reviews. So I Way DIY plans could potentially lead to you a whole new happier career.
An even bigger perk: DIY projects really allow you to have your wedding your way. Think about it. When your local florist creates a round rose bouquet for you, she’s probably using the same techniques and flowers she uses in just about every bouquet she makes. Artists have a signature style, and hers may be a certain pattern of floral placement with exactly thirty roses per bouquet and certain filler flowers . meaning your bouquet will look very much like those of the brides before and after you, plus or minus a few gardenias or lilies. But when you take on the task of making your own bouquet, you don’t have the experience to make one in a style identical to someone else’s. Whatever you make is your signature style. It probably won’t look like every other bride’s floral piece in town, because you’re adding your own flowers in your own choice of dimension and your own spiral pattern, your choice of color shading, your choice of greenery.
“We wish we had designed our own flowers. We asked for all-white flowers for the tribute floral arrangement at our ceremony, and our florist designed an all- pink tribute arrangement because she thought it would photograph better against all of the white florals in the room. She just didn’t listen to us.”— Serena, newlywed
